Bringing forth imagery of opal pink sunsets and clouds that slowly drift across the sky, Fthmlss’ celestial EP “Inbetween Skies” is sonically and texturally, an absolute joy to listen to. Much like his well-received EP and vinyl release, “Aloe”, Fthmlss’ latest release is a fresh unique take on lo-fi hip hop, with an emphasis on luscious sound design and a dreamy quality which bids the listener to sink into a blissful state. However, despite the warm exterior, there is a sense of unease in “Inbetween Skies”, which adds a certain weightiness to this EP once you begin to read between the lines.

Like the liminal state between waking and sleeping, there is a sense of gentle disquiet throughout “Inbetween Skies", as if someone is struggling to get out of paralysis dream. It’s not immediately noticeable, but once you find it it makes for a thought-provoking and multifaceted contrast of two very different emotions; restfulness and frustration. With an outer layer of fluid beats and cozy sound palettes, “Inbetween Skies” makes for an effortless listen. However, it’s the depths beneath the surface which will have listeners coming back for more time and time again.
